Compounding Services

Compounding-pharmacist_44788211_xxl.jpg

In every field of medicine, there are some patients who don't respond to traditional methods of treatment. Sometimes they need medicine at strengths that are not manufactured by drug companies, or perhaps they simply need a different method of ingesting a medication.

Our compounding service meets these needs. We will customize an individualized prescription for the specific need of the patient. Compounding provides solutions that are not met by commercial products due to the inavailability of the best dosages and/or delivery devices.

Compounding applications can include:

  •

  •

  • Hospice

  •

  • Ophthalmic

  •

  • Otic (for the ear)

  • Dermatology

  • Medication Flavoring

  • Chronic Pain Management

  • Neuropathies

  •

  • Infertility

  • Wound Therapy

  • Podiatry

  • Gastroenterology

We can also help patients who are experiencing chronic pain. For example, some arthritic patients cannot take certain medications due to gastrointestinal side effects. Working with you, their physician, we can provide them with a topical preparation with the anti-inflammatory or analgesic that has been prescribed for them. Compounded prescriptions often are used for pain management in hospice care.

Bio-Identical Hormones

Bio-identical hormones may help to reduce or eliminate the symptoms caused when the body decreases production of natural hormones.  They may also provide some protection against such age related diseases as osteoporosis and colon cancer along with helping to return the body's balance of hormones.  This is applicable to both men and women.

Goals of Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

  • Alleviate the symptoms caused by natural hormone loss in the body.

  • Give the protective benefits which were originally provided by naturally occurring hormones.

  • Re-establish a hormonal balance.

  • Increase bone density.

  • Enhance Libido.

  • Improve cholesterol and lipid profile.

Advantages of Bio-identical Hormones

  • Bio-identical hormones are hormones that have the identical chemical structure as those produced by the human body.

  • Reduce the unwanted side effects often associated with synthetic hormones.

For Women

Hormone replacement therapy is used for the treatment of menopausal and postmenopausal symptoms in women.  Estrogens, Progesterone and Androgens are used in various combinations tailored specifically for each individual.

For Men

Men also suffer an age-related decline in certain hormones such as Testosterone, similar to menopause in women.  Restored hormone levels may serve to alleviate subtle symptoms which have appeared slowly over an extended period of time.

For Women & Men

Thyroid and Adrenal glands suffer the effects of aging in both women and men.  Deficiencies in the hormones produced by these two glands may lead to a variety of symptoms which affect the body's ability to maintain overall health and vitality.

Veterinary

Dog Collar

The Prescription Shoppe is a compounding pharmacy where our compounding services extend beyond the scope of human medicine. Our role is to help veterinarians solve problems for patients with special needs. We can customize a pet's medication according to size, taste and easily administered dosage forms. Veterinarians have to deal with unique problems. We help solve these problems for small and large animals.

Our veterinarian compounding services include:

Small Dosages

Matching the dose with the animal's size is perhaps the most important function a compounding pharmacist can provide for small animal veterinarians. For example, keeping the volume dose of medication as small as possible, removing the bitter taste, then adding an appealing flavor are generally necessary to prepare a cat's medication. A tasty, concentrated 1-mL dosage -- squeezed onto a cat's paw -- will certainly get licked off since cats don't like having something on their paws.

Veterinary Medicine Flavoring

Many commercially available medicines are not flavored for veterinary use. We can make compliance much easier by creating a customized product that even a finicky cat won't mind taking. We have many different flavors in our lab and the experience to give each medicine the appropriate taste for each animal. We have the usual beef, chicken or fish but what about some of our more exotic animal patients? We make flavored medicine such as green apple for a marmoset, raspberry for an iguana or a pigeon, malt for a goat, grape for a cockatoo, cheese for a rat, banana for a ferret, and apple or orange for exotic birds.

Commercially Unavailable Medicine

If a manufacturer no longer makes a medication, we can often obtain the pure pharmaceutical powder and ensure your client continues on their prescribed medication regimen.

Special Note For Veterinarians

We can supply your office or your patients directly according to your preference.

Respecting our veterinarians business, we do not dispense or stock veterinary products such as heartworm preventatives, vaccines, dewormers, etc., which are sold in most veterinarian offices.

We ask that you keep us in mind when you are looking for a better solution to manage your patient's conditions. We will be happy to be "your problem solvers"!

Pediatrics

Children are a good example of the type of patients who benefit most from compounding. Often, parents have a tough time getting their children to take medicine because of the taste. A compounding pharmacist can work directly with the physician and the patient to select a flavoring agent, such as vanilla, butternut or tutti frutti, which provides both an appropriate match for the medication's properties and the patient's taste preferences. The pharmaceutical industry supplies only limited dosage forms, usually for economic reasons. The solid tablet to be taken orally or the alternate injection form do not always address the needs of children, premature infants or special needs patients. Although patents for the manufacture of a specifically pediatric form of a drug may be obtained, most companies still do not go this extra distance as it is not economically feasible for them. This opens the door to yet another application for compounding. Compounding often provides children with syrups, elixirs, suspensions, emulsions, gummy bears, popsicles and other methods that make it easier to take medications which would not otherwise be available without compounding. The compounding pharmacist provides another, often the only other, option for patients, particularly children, who are allergic to a preservative, dye, flavor, or other ingredient in a commercial product. Many of the lifesaving and life sustaining drugs required by premature infants are made available only through compounding.
